President-elect Donald Trump will \u201cprobably\u201d travel to Southern California next week, he told NBC News, making the likely first trip of his second term to the liberal stronghold still reeling from some of the worst wildfires in its history.<\/p>\n
In a wide-ranging phone interview<\/a> on Saturday with \u201cMeet the Press\u201d moderator Kristen Welker, Trump said he \u201cwas going to go, actually yesterday,\u201d to the Golden State, but decided \u201cit would be better if I went as president.\u201d<\/p>\n The wildfires have been raging in and around Los Angeles since Jan. 7, killing dozens and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate, according to the Associated Press<\/a>, as they ravaged the country\u2019s second-largest city.<\/p>\n California\u2019s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom \u2014 who has been criticized by Trump and Republicans for his handling of the fires \u2014 invited Trump<\/a> to visit California last week. President Joe Biden was in Los Angeles when the fires started earlier this month, and Vice President Kamala Harris, whose primary residence is in Los Angeles, canceled her final foreign trip as vice president due to the fires.<\/p>\n Tensions have flared in recent weeks between Trump and Newsom<\/a>, and in the interview, Trump said he had not yet spoken to the governor about the fires. Trump also discussed a number of other issues, including his plans to ramp up mass deportations \u201cvery early, very quickly,\u201d but said he didn\u2019t want to reveal which cities the operation would begin in because \u201cyou\u2019ll see it firsthand.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump said he believes he and his team \u201cmade the right decision\u201d to move Monday\u2019s inauguration ceremony<\/a> into the Capitol due to freezing temperatures, and added that he aims to sign \u201ca record-setting number of documents \u2026 right after this [inauguration] speech.\u201d<\/p>\n
