{"id":126016,"date":"2025-03-28T16:16:20","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T16:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cryptospotters.net\/?p=126016"},"modified":"2025-03-28T16:16:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T16:16:20","slug":"coinbases-ethereum-staking-dominance-risks-overcentralization-execs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cryptospotters.net\/?p=126016","title":{"rendered":"Coinbase\u2019s Ethereum staking dominance risks overcentralization: Execs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Source: Cointelegraph.com NewsCoinbase\u2019s emergence as the Ethereum network\u2019s largest node operator raises concerns about network centralization that could worsen as institutional adoption accelerates, industry executives told Cointelegraph.\u00a0<br \/>\nOn March 19, Coinbase published a report disclosing that the US cryptocurrency exchange controlled more than 11% of staked Ether (ETH), more than any other Ethereum node operator.\u00a0<br \/>\nAccording to Karan Sirdesai, CEO of Web3 startup Mira Network, Coinbase\u2019s growing dominance highlights \u201ca systemic issue in Ethereum\u2019s staking architecture.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re creating a system where a handful of major players control an outsized portion of network security, undermining the core promise of decentralization,\u201d Sirdesai told Cointelegraph.<br \/>\nAccording to the report, Coinbase controlled 3.84 million ETH staked to 120,000 validators, representing 11.42% of staked Ether as of March 4.\u00a0<br \/>\nLiquid staking protocol Lido controls a larger share of staked Ether overall \u2014 approximately 9.4 million ETH, according to Lido\u2019s website.<br \/>\nHowever, Lido\u2019s staked Ether is distributed across dozens of independent node operators, Anthony Sassano, host of The Daily Gwei, said in a March 19 post on the X platform.<br \/>\nTo limit risks, Coinbase spreads staking operations across five countries and employs multiple cloud providers, Ethereum clients, and relays, according to its report. \u201cDiversification at the network level and the overall health of the network is always a priority for us. Source: CoinbaseRelated:\u00a0Ether ETFs poised to surge in 2025, analysts say<br \/>\nImpending centralization risks<br \/>\nEthereum\u2019s network concentration could worsen if US exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are permitted to begin staking \u2014 a priority for asset managers such as BlackRock.<br \/>\nCoinbase is the largest custodian for US crypto ETFs and holds ETH on behalf of eight of the nine US spot Ether funds, the exchange said in January.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cThis type of network consolidation brings with it increased risk of censorship and reduced network resilience,\u201d Temujin Louie, CEO of Wanchain, a blockchain interoperability protocol, told Cointelegraph.\u00a0<br \/>\nFor instance, high staking concentrations \u201crepresent potential points of regulatory pressure\u2026 [and] these large staking entities will likely prioritize regulatory adherence over network censorship resistance when faced with difficult choices,\u201d Sirdesai said.<br \/>\nMeanwhile, new US regulatory guidance allowing banks to act as validators for blockchain networks adds to centralization risks, several crypto executives said.<br \/>\n\u201cIf too much stake consolidates under regulated entities like Coinbase and US banks, Ethereum will become more like traditional financial systems,\u201d Louie said.\u00a0<br \/>\nConversely, more institutional validators could actually improve staking concentrations. Cryptocurrency exchange Robinhood is especially well positioned to check Coinbase\u2019s staking dominance, according to Sirdesai.<br \/>\nRobinhood already has \u201cthe crypto infrastructure, user base, and technical capabilities to move into staking rapidly.
