The House of Commons was exercised on Wednesday about the prospect of England beating Argentina in tonight\u2019s World Cup semifinal.<\/p>\n
Ahead of Keir Starmer\u2019s last Prime Minister’s Questions as premier before he exits the top job, Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle \u2014 the normally impartial chair \u2014 said he hoped the PM will be \u201cbringing home” World Cup victory to widespread cheers.<\/p>\n
Starmer, a huge soccer fan who cheers for Arsenal in the Premier League, opened PMQs by stressing his \u201cimportant appointment with the television\u201d this evening to watch the match live.<\/p>\n
Opposition Conservative MP Graham Stuart compared the prime minister to England superstar Jude Bellingham by \u201cscoring the winning goal, leading our team to victory,\u201d though Starmer had \u201cnow been handed a red card by the 400 dodgy referees behind him,\u201d referring to the 2024 election win before a Labour rebellion that helped topple him.<\/p>\n
The PM continued on the subject of red cards by saying \u201cI can\u2019t tell him how much incoming I had \u2026 to get the England red card adjusted,\u201d after President Donald Trump\u2019s intervention to help overturn the suspension of U.S. striker Folarin Balogun.<\/p>\n
Starmer said he didn\u2019t follow the U.S. president\u2019s example, after Jarell Quansah was sent off against Mexico and suspended.<\/p>\n
