In Andrew Cuomo\u2019s first interview since announcing his resignation earlier this week, the New York governor said he didn\u2019t want to \u201cdrag the state\u201d through a months-long impeachment investigation \u2014 only to win. <\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like I did the right thing. I did the right thing for the state,\u201d Cuomo told New York Magazine<\/a> of his decision to resign. \u201cI\u2019m not gonna drag the state through the mud, through a three-month, four-month impeachment, and then win, and have made the State Legislature and the state government look like a ship of fools.\u201d<\/p>\n He maintained he couldn\u2019t put New York through that process when his life’s work was \u201cfor the exact opposite.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not doing that. I feel good. I\u2019m not a martyr. It\u2019s just, I saw the options, option A, option B,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n Cuomo on Tuesday announced he would step down, effective Aug. 24, in response to growing pressure to resign or face impeachment amid the release of a report that found he sexually harassed nearly a dozen women. The New York State Assembly suspended its investigation<\/a> into Cuomo on Friday. <\/p>\n \u201cThe purpose of the Assembly Judiciary Committee\u2019s impeachment investigation was to determine whether Governor Cuomo should remain in office. The governor\u2019s resignation answers that directive,\u201d Speaker Carl Heastie (D-Bronx) said Friday. <\/p>\n Cuomo’s immediate plans, like where he will now live, are uncertain. The governor\u2019s only residence in recent years has been the Albany governor’s mansion. Cuomo told the magazine he didn’t know what he was going to do. <\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not disappearing. I have a voice, I have a perspective and that\u2019s not gonna change,\u201d Cuomo said. \u201cAnd the details aren\u2019t really that important to me to tell you the truth. You know? I\u2019m a New Yorker, I\u2019ve lived here, I\u2019ve lived in Queens, I\u2019ve lived in the city, I\u2019ve lived upstate, I\u2019ve lived everywhere, I came to Washington, so that\u2019s \u2026 I don\u2019t really care about that. I\u2019ll figure that out. And I think I did the right thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
