McConaughey, whose possible candidacy was seen as a complication in Texas\u2019 2022 gubernatorial race, said he would instead continue to work to support businesses, entrepreneurs, foundations and organizations that make life better.<\/p>\n
\u201cPoliticians,\u201c he said, \u201cthe good ones can help us get where we need to go, yeah. But let\u2019s be clear: They can\u2018t do anything for us unless we chose to do for ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n
McConaughey, who won an Oscar for his performance in 2013\u2019s \u201cDallas Buyers Club,\u201c said he\u2018d spent the past two years trying to listen and learn, as well as studying local and national politics. <\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2018ve learned that freedom comes with responsibility,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
McConaughey\u2019s possible entry into the field was seen as a wild card in a race that already features incumbent Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, former Florida Rep. Allen West \u2014 who is challenging Abbott from the right \u2014 and former Democratic Rep. Beto O\u2019Rourke, among others. Amid all the speculation about him, it wasn\u2019t clear what type of campaign McConaughey was considering waging or what issues he would have focused on.<\/p>\n
The actor finished his Twitter address with the phrase, \u201cJust keep livin\u2018,\u201c a paean to his breakthrough role in the 1993 movie \u201cDazed and Confused.\u201d<\/p>\n
