All living former presidents and first ladies \u2014 with the exception of Donald and Melania Trump \u2014 appear in a public service announcement released Thursday urging Americans to get vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.<\/p>\n
The video<\/a> shows Barack and Michelle Obama, George W. and Laura Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter receiving their shots. Another video<\/a>, filmed at Arlington National Cemetery, features former Presidents Obama, Bush and Clinton encouraging vaccination.<\/p>\n \u201cWe urge you to get vaccinated when it\u2019s available to you,\u201d Barack Obama says in the first video, while George W. Bush tells Americans to \u201croll up your sleeve and do your part.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis is our shot,\u201d adds Bill Clinton, with Jimmy Carter delivering the closing message: \u201cNow, it\u2019s up to you.\u201d<\/p>\n The PSAs were produced by the Ad Council and COVID Collaborative as part of their Covid-19 Vaccine Education Initiative\u2019s \u201cIt\u2019s Up To You\u201d campaign, and the project specifically featuring the former presidents and first ladies began last December.<\/p>\n The videos Thursday are just the latest public initiative by former presidents not to include Donald Trump, who left office in January upon the inauguration of President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n As part of the inaugural proceedings, Obama, Bush and Clinton put out a joint video statement<\/a> promoting bipartisanship and wishing Biden well. All three men also appeared in-person for Biden\u2019s swearing in; the 96-year-old Carter did not attend.<\/p>\n Trump was notably absent on Inauguration Day, declining to participate<\/a> in the ceremonial transfer of power after falsely alleging for weeks that Biden had won the 2020 White House race illegitimately. Biden said Trump\u2019s decision not to attend was a \u201cgood thing\u201d after the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection.<\/p>\n The release of the vaccination PSAs comes after several news outlets reported<\/a> this month that Donald and Melania Trump received their coronavirus vaccinations privately at the White House in January.<\/p>\n Asked whether Donald Trump was invited to participate in the new videos, a spokesperson for the Ad Council reiterated that the project started last year and that one of the videos was filmed on Inauguration Day, when Trump was not in attendance.<\/p>\n \u201cWe just learned last week that President Trump did get vaccinated and were so pleased he advised Americans to \u2018go get your shot,\u2019\u201d the spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n Spokespeople for Trump\u2019s post-presidential office did not immediately return a request for comment on the videos or whether he was offered an opportunity to appear in them.<\/p>\n
