A handful of candidates also seized the opportunity to appear on air Sunday during one of the biggest TV events of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Dave McCormick, who\u2019s running in Pennsylvania\u2019s Senate primary, brought the anti-Biden slogan \u201cLet\u2019s Go Brandon\u201d to prime time on Sunday. McCormick aired a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uinu8vldWaM&amp;t=29s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-second spot<\/a> featuring audio of the chant, a euphemism for \u201cF\u2014 Joe Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ad displays headlines documenting rising crime, an increase in illegal border crossings and rising inflation, among other issues. The commercial ends with text that reads \u201cTHIS IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN BRANDON,\u201d and aired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/pennsylvania-senate-race-dave-mccormick-to-air-lets-go-brandon-ad-during-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during the Super Bowl in Pennsylvania<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>McCormick wasn\u2019t the only one to bash the president during Super Bowl 56. Another GOP Senate hopeful, Jim Lamon in Arizona, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/jim-lamon-spent-30k-local-super-bowl-ad-shoots-biden-pelosi-1678475?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiossneakpeek&amp;stream=top\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spent six figures<\/a> to produce and <a href=\"https:\/\/host2.adimpact.com\/admo\/viewer\/5283073\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">air an ad<\/a> that depicts him in an old Western-style shootout with President Joe Biden, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.). Lamon, wearing a sheriff\u2019s badge and a cowboy hat, shoots weapons out of the hands of his Democratic adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>In Michigan, Republican gubernatorial candidate Perry Johnson took a more traditional approach. Johnson, a businessperson, kicked off a $1.5 million <a href=\"https:\/\/host2.adimpact.com\/admo\/viewer\/5282782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ad buy<\/a> that will run through the first week of March, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2022\/02\/13\/super-bowl-ad-touts-gop-governor-hopeful-perry-johnson-quality-guru\/6771855001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Detroit News\u2019 Craig Mauger<\/a>. The ad highlight\u2019s Perry\u2019s background as a perfection-seeking \u201cguru\u201d who brought higher standards to the automotive industry. Perry is one of more than a dozen Republicans running for a chance to take on Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.<\/p>\n<p>Candidates have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/02\/04\/super-bowl-ads-politics-congress-candidates-389081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long used the Super Bowl to air political ads<\/a> in House, Senate and gubernatorial races. Former President Donald Trump took advantage of the game in 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/01\/07\/donald-trump-10-million-dollar-super-bowl-ad-095623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spending $10 million on the airwaves<\/a> just days before the Iowa Democratic caucuses.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s big event even featured an almost-candidate \u2014 Matthew McConaughey. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/05\/16\/matthew-mcconaughey-texas-governor-run-488536\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The actor flirted with a bid for Texas governor<\/a> last year, before opting against running against GOP Gov. Greg Abbott.
