The State Department on Thursday announced that it will make an \u201cX\u201d gender marker available on U.S. passports beginning next month, and the option to select the marker for other forms of documentation will become available next year.<\/p>\n
On State Department public forms, the \u201cX\u201d gender marker will be defined as \u201cUnspecified or another gender identity.\u201d Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that the definition \u201cis respectful of individuals\u2019 privacy while advancing inclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n
The news of the \u201cX\u201d gender marker comes after the State Department announced last June that it would begin allowing U.S. passport applicants to self-select their gender as \u201cM\u201d or \u201cF,\u201d and that it would no longer require medical certification if an applicant\u2019s choice did not match the gender on their other documentation.<\/p>\n
The State Department also announced at the time that it had \u201cbegun moving towards adding a gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming persons\u201d applying for a U.S. passport or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad.<\/p>\n
