Joe Kahn, the managing editor of The New York Times, has been selected to serve as the paper\u2019s executive editor, the Times reported on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Kahn\u2019s appointment caps months of speculation about who would replace current executive editor Dean Baquet, who in 2014 became the Times\u2019 first Black top editor.<\/p>\n
Baquet was expected to retire sometime this year, in keeping with the company\u2019s traditional retirement age of 65 for masthead editors. Baquet hit that benchmark last September.<\/p>\n
Kahn, 57, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning China correspondent who has also reported for The Dallas Morning News and The Wall Street Journal. He joined the Times in 2008 as its Beijing bureau chief, and he went on to become its deputy foreign editor in 2008 and its international editor in 2011.<\/p>\n
Kahn was promoted to managing editor in 2016 and is the second-ranking editor in the Times newsroom. Kahn is expected to formally succeed Baquet in June.<\/p>\n
A.G. Sulzberger, the Times\u2019 publisher, announced Kahn\u2019s appointment in a memo to staff that the Times reported on Tuesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cFor many people, especially those who have worked alongside Joe \u2014 a brilliant journalist and a brave and principled leader \u2014 this announcement will come as no surprise,\u201d Sulzberger wrote.<\/p>\n Kahn \u201cbrings impeccable news judgment, a sophisticated understanding of the forces shaping the world and a long track record of helping journalists produce their most ambitious and courageous work,\u201d Sulzberger added.<\/p>\n
