ORLANDO, Fla. \u2014 While former President Donald Trump was announcing his 2024 comeback campaign Tuesday night, his chief potential Republican primary rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, was 168 miles to the north, outlining a different electoral path forward for the party.<\/p>\n
During a closed-door appearance before the Republican Governors Association meeting at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Orlando, the governor gave a detailed explanation on how he scored a lopsided reelection last Tuesday \u2014 including examples laden with implicit contrasts to the former president, who went unmentioned.<\/p>\n
DeSantis argued forcefully against the widely shared Trump-era conventional wisdom that the party couldn\u2019t appeal simultaneously to suburban and rural voters, saying that he \u201cwon overwhelmingly\u201d with suburbanites while also racking up massive \u201cSaddam Hussein margins\u201d in the state\u2019s rural areas, according to a recording of the one-hour appearance obtained by POLITICO.<\/p>\n
And while Trump\u2019s attacks on the use of mail ballots have complicated the GOP\u2019s voter turnout efforts and sparked a reckoning within the party since the midterms, DeSantis noted that he had aggressively pushed his supporters to cast their ballots before Election Day in Florida, resulting in him \u201ckill[ing] the Democrats\u201d in early voting.<\/p>\n
The appearance came during a two-day conference where governors, donors, and senior party officials grappled with last week\u2019s disappointing midterm election and conveyed the desire for a new blueprint for the party. With the Florida governor and other prospective candidates waiting in the wings, many of the attendees said it was time for Republicans to move forward, blaming Trump for their failure.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the party needs to move on, because I think at the end of the day extremism has come to be associated with the former president,\u201d said outgoing Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, who attributed this month\u2019s losses to out-of-the-mainstream Trump-backed candidates who \u201csimply did not perform.\u201d<\/p>\n
One of the most popular governors in the nation, Baker decided against running for reelection as Trump was moving to back a primary challenger<\/a>. The candidate who Republicans ended up nominating lost overwhelmingly last week, giving Democrats the Massachusetts governorship for the first time since 2015.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, Republicans failed to defeat sitting Democratic governors in states including Michigan, Wisconsin, and Kansas. While the party captured the Nevada governorship, they lost their hold on three other states.<\/p>\n Behind the scenes at the RGA meeting, Republicans vented. During one closed-door session, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie \u2014 a former Trump ally-turned-critic \u2014 received applause<\/a> when he blamed Trump for the midterm defeats. Axios was first to report Christie\u2019s comments. Bobbie Kilberg, a Northern Virginia-based donor, also sharply criticized the former president, calling Trump a \u201cclear and present danger to the Republican Party.\u201d<\/p>\n In an illustration of the anxiety gripping the GOP, those who\u2019ve previously aligned themselves with Trump expressed little desire to weigh in.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not going there,\u201d said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who was backed by Trump in his successful 2022 reelection, when asked if he\u2019d support the former president\u2019s comeback bid.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m not doing an interview, thanks,\u201d Nevada Gov.-elect Joe Lombardo, another Trump endorsee, told an approaching reporter.<\/p>\n Some questioned Trump\u2019s decision to launch his candidacy at all.<\/p>\n \u201cWe just got through an election. Aren\u2019t we all a little exhausted? \u2026 He\u2019s not going to deliver a new message. There\u2019s not going to be anything exciting or new about this. It\u2019s going to be what is expected, and it\u2019s going to be at his weakest point politically,\u201d New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, who like Baker has been critical of Trump, said hours before Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign announcement. \u201cThink about that. You\u2019re the former president. You\u2019re as weak as you\u2019ve ever been politically. You\u2019re not even necessarily the frontrunner.\u201d<\/p>\n But with Trump having launched that third presidential bid, the party will again face the prospect that Trump-aligned candidates will run for governor in the future.<\/p>\n Several governors said the party was determined to engage aggressively in Republican primaries to ensure that the most electable candidates won the nomination \u2014 something that did not always happen in 2022. Republicans were especially stung by the nomination in Pennsylvania of Doug Mastriano, a prominent Trump supporter who cast doubt on the veracity of the 2020 election results and was outside the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. Mastriano was handily defeated in the general election.<\/p>\n \u201cWe want winners in November, that\u2019s all that matters \u2014 winning, when you\u2019re talking about the political aspect of it,\u201d said Sununu.<\/p>\n But as they surveyed the landscape, some governors indicated the party\u2019s difficulties went beyond Trump. Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts, the RGA\u2019s outgoing co-chair, said Republicans would be examining their campaign mechanics, including advertising strategy.<\/p>\n \u201cWe do think we had opportunities to be able to do more,\u201d said Ricketts, who is termed out of office. \u201cWe\u2019ve been talking about how we can do better in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n Attendees said there was little question that the outcome of the midterm election all but guaranteed that Trump would face a serious primary challenge \u2014 perhaps from as many as 10 prospective candidates.<\/p>\n The list of would-be rivals includes at least three governors: DeSantis, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan. All three campaigned aggressively across the country during the midterms, raising their profiles ahead of the coming presidential primary.<\/p>\n Hogan, another outspoken Trump critic who is finishing his final term as governor, said he would make a final decision on whether to run sometime next year. But he noted that the \u201clane\u201d he was seeking out \u2014 as one willing to speak out against the former president and sketch a more moderate direction for the party \u2014 is now \u201cwider than it\u2019s ever been and will continue to widen\u201d and attract other potential contenders.<\/p>\n But most of the focus at the conference was on DeSantis.<\/p>\n The home-state governor used his appearance to celebrate his crushing win, describing everything from his TV advertising to his outreach to Latinos, a traditionally Democratic-friendly voting bloc that broke for him over Democrat Charlie Crist, according to exit polls.<\/p>\n He also conveyed how his wife, Casey DeSantis, had emerged as a campaign force of her own. DeSantis described her decision to appear in a one-minute TV ad<\/a>, in which she talked about how her husband had helped her through her battle with breast cancer.<\/p>\n The Florida first lady, DeSantis said, kicked staff out of the room prior to filming the spot and decided against involving consultants, choosing instead to speak \u201cfrom the heart\u201d in an unscripted way. The result, he said, was an ad that, unlike many political commercials, had an impact on voters.<\/p>\n \u201cPeople would come up to me, and not just women, and they would say, \u2018I cried when I saw your wife\u2019s ad,\u2019\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cSo a lot of people would say it was one of the best ads that they had ever seen in a political campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n
