Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday endorsed Rep. Elise Stefanik to replace Rep. Liz Cheney as House GOP conference chair, hastening the effort to remove the third-ranking House Republican over her refusal to promote Trump\u2019s falsehoods about the 2020 election.<\/p>\n
\u201cLiz Cheney is a warmongering fool who has no business in Republican Party Leadership. We want leaders who believe in the Make America Great Again movement, and prioritize the values of America First,\u201d Trump said in a statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n \u201cElise Stefanik is a far superior choice, and she has my COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement for GOP Conference Chair. Elise is a tough and smart communicator!\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s endorsement of Stefanik (R-N.Y.) comes after House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) said on Wednesday morning that she should serve as the House GOP conference chair instead of Cheney (R-Wyo.).<\/p>\n \u201cThank you President Trump for your 100% support for House GOP Conference Chair. We are unified and focused on FIRING PELOSI & WINNING in 2022!\u201d Stefanik wrote on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n Trump had already attacked Cheney in an earlier statement<\/a> on Wednesday for continuing \u201cto unknowingly and foolishly say that there was no Election Fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election.\u201d<\/p>\n A spokesperson for Cheney\u2019s office did not immediately return a request for comment on either of the former president\u2019s statements.<\/p>\n Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump for inciting the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, has feuded in recent weeks with fellow House Republican leaders over Trump\u2019s role in the future of the GOP, as well as his for perpetuating the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen.<\/p>\n The Republican infighting escalated significantly<\/a> this week, after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on Tuesday that his members had voiced concerns about Cheney\u2019s \u201cability to carry out\u201d her job duties.<\/p>\n Trump\u2019s initial statement on Wednesday, however, undercut those remarks by McCarthy, making clear that his qualms with Cheney were rooted in her refusal to echo his false election claims \u2014 not concerns with her messaging or on-the-job performance.<\/p>\n Cheney, for her part, is not actively rallying support<\/a> from colleagues to maintain her position.<\/p>\n
