President Joe Biden says Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York should resign and may face prosecution if an investigation confirms claims of sexual harassment against him.
“Yes, I think he’ll probably end up being prosecuted, too,” Biden said, responding to a question from ABC’s George Stepanopoulos.
“There could be a criminal prosecution attached to it, I just don’t know,” he said later in the interview.
Biden’s remarks in an interview excerpt released on Tuesday evening were his strongest to date on the ongoing scandal that has embroiled the New York governor in the past three weeks, with at least six women coming forward to accuse Cuomo of inappropriate behavior.
His comments come after a sudden groundswell of opposition to Cuomo emerged on Friday, with nearly all of New York’s congressional delegation releasing statements calling on the governor to resign, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Most, however, have not gone so far as to address potential prosecution.
In the interview, Biden reiterated his position that an ongoing investigation by the state attorney general must be completed before any action is taken against the governor.
“It takes a lot of courage to come forward,” he said. “So the presumption is, it should be taken seriously and it should be investigated, and that’s what’s under way now.”
